The Bright, Boundless Field
The field of boundless emptiness is what exists from the very beginning. You must purify, cure, grind down, or brush away all the tendencies you have fabricated into apparent habits. Then you can reside in the clear circle of brightness. Utter emptiness has no image, upright independence does not rely on anything. Just expand and illuminate the original truth unconcerned by external conditions. Accordingly we are told to realize that not a single thing exists. In this field birth and death do not appear. The deep source, transparent down to the bottom, can radiantly shine and can respond unencumbered to each speck of dust without becoming its partner. The subtlety of seeing and hearing transcends mere colors and sounds. The whole affair functions without leaving traces, and mirrors without obscurations. Very naturally mind and dharmas emerge and harmonize. An Ancient said that non-mind enacts and fulfills the way of non-mind. Enacting and fulfilling the way of non-mind, finally you can rest. Proceeding you are able to guide the assembly. With thoughts clear, sitting silently, wander into the center of the circle of wonder. This is how you must penetrate and study.
________
Create a practice: purify, cure, grind down, brush away fabricated tendencies = when I find myself engaged/caught in some habitual pattern of thinking, acting, being, I will take a deep breath in, and as I exhale, visualize a great wind blowing through and clearing the field -or- during meditation, I will hold and relate to myself and the space around me as residing in the clear circle of brightness and wandering into the center of the circle of wonder.
Carry a koan: the deep source, transparent down to the bottom, can radiantly shine and can respond unencumbered to each speck of dust without becoming its partner = carrying this phrase with me, noticing what/where in my experience/life this deep source is, the shining of it, the specks of dust that come and go, when there is responding without partnering and with partnering, what I discover about the difference, etc.
Cultivate a realization: very naturally mind and dharmas emerge and harmonize = This reminds me of a time when everything suddenly became one unified field, everything connected, seamless -or- When I read this, I felt the troubles and difficulties I’d been experiencing of late kind of melt away, with a feeling of warmth and openness; though nothing’s fundamentally changed about my situation, it just no longer feels like a problem or burden.
